Ed Boon shows off demo live at E3 2014

Even though Mortal Kombat X was officially announced, we hadn’t really touched upon its specifics thus far in the midst of all things E3. Luckily, IGN sat down with NetherRealm Studios head Ed Boon for a 10-minute gameplay demo to showcase the game proper.

New characters Cassie Cage and D’Vorah were on tap to demonstrate some of the “variations” on each fighter as well as a bit of what each character is capable of. Boon indicated some interactivity as far as the backgrounds go, such as being able to grab a dead body and hurl it at your opponent, or run up the wall to attack from above.

Personally, I found the environments bland and uninspired, and Cassie’s facial animations were pretty wonky-looking. I understand this is early footage, but so far I’m completely unimpressed. I wanted so badly to see some skin-crawling fatalities, and Cassie’s “plugging the headshot wound with bubble gum” move was cute, but not exactly what I was looking for. Kotal Kahn ripped out Ferra/Torr’s heart and crushed it. Yawn. There was a wasted opportunity with Sub-Zero, but by the end when Ferra/Torr ripped Cassie Cage apart right down the middle, I was feeling a little more excited.

If anything, I think Mortal Kombat X is taking a step backward when it comes to brutality. Or maybe I’ve just become completely desensitized. One thing’s for sure: Mortal Kombat X has to come a long way before it grabs my attention.
