CD Projekt Red: Just because Witcher 3 is coming to Switch, it doesn’t mean that Cyberpunk 2077 is too

Only in your dreams?

As you may have noticed, a ton of publishers who previously had zero interest in Nintendo platforms are getting on the Switch train.

We have Blizzard, who hasn’t entertained the idea of a Nintendo port since StarCraft 64, bringing Diablo III and Overwatch to the system, and now, CD Projekt Red is getting ready to launch Witcher III on Switch: Switcher, if you will. So what about Cyberpunk 2077? Hah, about that.

GameSpot spoke to the publisher at PAX Australia, and got a pretty succinct answer: “Who would have thought a game like The Witcher 3 would be possible on Switch, so who knows? I guess we’ll see, if we decide to put it on the Switch, if we can do it. Probably not.” That’s not a company rep, that’s John Mamais, head of the Studio Krakow’s location (who reportedly contributed to roughly “one third” of the game), saying “probably not” in terms of the reality of it. Witcher III was a game from 2015: Cyberpunk 2077 is a whole ‘nother updated animal.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, as Cyberpunk 2077 still hasn’t hit any platforms yet. Mamais has a response to that too: “A lot of people do [feel good about the April 2020 date and] some people are scared about the date. It’s a normal kind of mixture of feeling about that date in the studio. That’s the directive; we need to keep that date.”

Mamais also teases a ton of other potential Cyberpunk happenings, like something else they can do with Keanu beyond the scope of what they originally planned due to the rave reception, possibly following the “free DLC” model of Witcher III post-launch, the lack of multiplayer plans for Cyberpunk, and the fact that Mamais and his team will “see what [they] can do” with the upcoming PS5 and Project Scarlett.

Five months isn’t that long in the scope of game development, but there’s a lot more we have yet to learn about Cyberpunk 2077 from now until launch.
