Captain Obvious: Sony’s Jack Tretton thinks the PlayStation 3 needs videogames

As you all know by now, the PlayStation 3 has its very own blog, which for the most part is used for Sony employees to say “oh hai guyz.” Recently, however, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Jack Tretton, has put virtual pen to virtual paper in order to virtually state the virtual obvious – Sony needs more games on the PS3. I personally hadn’t noticed, but apparently there aren’t many games worth playing on that particular console right now. Thankfully, Jacky-boy is on the case and will see us right.

“We have to bring the games to market that will showcase what the PS3 can do and ultimately entertain you like no other games have,” writes Tretton. “We need to provide proof of what the PS3 can do for you and work tirelessly to improve the value and justify your investment. At the end of the day, it’s always been about the games.” Really? I personally always thought gaming was about the wine and cheese soirees.

Tretton promises that games are on the way. “We have more than 15 games coming from our own internal studios alone this year for PS3. Our third party partners will weigh in with a host of great games giving us more than 100 titles by year end on that system alone.” He also reminds readers that the PSP is getting love with 18 upcoming titles and that the PlayStation Network will have “a slew of games and game packs,” not least among them being Warhawk.

As much fun as I’ve poked, it’s good that the boys at Sony are focusing on their games and recognise that they can’t just sit on their backsides screaming “but the Blu-ray!” We know how powerful the system is, it’s high time Sony used that strength. I look forward to seeing what the PS3 can do in the future.
