Capcom plans to increase release rate for Resident Evil

The games industry has had a rough year, and few publishers would know that better than Capcom. To help combat this, the company hopes to increase the output of titles in popular franchises, such as Resident Evil.

According to a report from Nikkei, Capcom is aiming to achieve a release rate of three to four titles yearly in its biggest IPs. This would be an increase of 30% over their current model. In order to reduce the development time on titles to achieve this goal, the Japanese publisher will continue its practice of outsourcing development to European and North American firms.

More games can be a good thing, but isn’t that part of the problem we already have? Gamers have a lot of choice, far more than they ever have before, but the iterative nature of exploiting high-profile franchises has the effect of making product seem homogenized. I’m not sure if the solution should be foisting more product on wallets that are already feeling the pinch of a tough economy and already have games releasing at a rate faster than they can buy them.
