Can you pause Nightingale? How to stay safe while AFK

Be safe out there

In an ideal world, we’d have unending time to spend traversing the Fae Realms in Nightingale. However with gamer parents, bathroom breaks, and unscheduled interruptions which require our focus, sometimes you just need to take a short break. So is it possible to pause Nightingale?

The short answer to this is, sadly, ‘no’. Because Nightingale is an ‘always online’ game, constantly connected to servers, you can’t pause the game in order to take a break. Whether you’re going to be gone for five minutes or five hours, the game will continue in your absence and the world around you is likely to cause you harm.

However, there are some things that can be done to save you from the hassle of coming back to a dead character. Let’s dive into how to stay safe while you’re AFK.

How to stay safe when you’re AFK

Everything, and I do mean everything, in this game wants to kill you:

  • The water in the Swamp Biome gives you diseases
  • The sun in the Desert Biome will overheat you to death
  • Hail causes damage
  • Creatures, obviously, have it out for you
  • If you don’t eat, you die
  • If you don’t sleep, you die
  • If you get too cold while out after dark, you die

I don’t need to carry on. Everything wants to be the end of you and if you’re leaving your computer for even a few minutes, everything can change. If you can, I’d urge you to head back to your Abeyance Realm as it’s the safest place you can leave your character, but if you can’t then follow these tips to stay safe.

Shelter is the number one priority, regardless of what biome you’re in. If you have time to build a tent or crude cube, make sure you do, and then put a campfire in there to keep you warm. Not only will this protect you from the murderous weather, but you’ll also be safe from creatures (as long as you shut the door) and the fire will keep you warm.

Make sure you eat and sleep before you rush off, too. Like I said, if you get too tired or too hungry you will eventually wither away and die, so make sure all your bars are filled and then you should be good to go for a limited amount of time.

If you’re playing in multiplayer, have hope and faith that your party-mates will build a shelter around you when it rains as my fiance did during our first outing into the Fae Realms.

If in doubt, log off

If there’s any possibility that you might be gone for long enough for one or a combination of the above mentioned things to prematurely end your adventure, it’s probably safest to log off and come back when you’ve got more time.

Unexpected interruptions are to be expected. As a parent, I know all too well how suddenly you can be pulled away from a game to do something in the real world. At the end of the day, it’s just a game and you can rest assured that even if you die while you’re AFK, you can respawn and continue on pretty much from where you left off

Just don’t forget to go and pick up the items you left behind where you fell.
