A Call of Duty movie is officially in the works, and we’re wondering what took so long for it to finally happen

After decades of dominating the gaming sphere, Call of Duty is officially coming to the silver screen.

A massive deal has been signed between CoD publisher Activision and movie-maker Paramount to bring the decades-long FPS franchise to movie theaters everywhere. The top-selling game franchise for 16 years running will now make its way to the box office.

“As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true,” Paramount CEO David Ellison said in a statement. “From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”

It’s kind of shocking that it’s taken this long for a CoD movie to get made. It seems perfectly ripe for the Hollywood treatment, with big-budget action scenes being commonplace among the game’s campaigns for several years. But now, Activision has finally found a deal worth taking, although financials of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We’re approaching this film with the same disciplined, uncompromising commitment to excellence that guided our work on Top Gun: Maverick, ensuring it meets the exceptionally high standards this franchise and its fans deserve,” Ellison said. “I can promise that we are resolute in our mission to deliver a cinematic experience that honors the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand – thrilling longtime fans of Call of Duty while captivating a whole new generation.” 

Other than casting announcements, a director, and a script, one other big question remains: which storyline will the movie adapt? Will it be something entirely new? Will it borrow characters from the games? If so, will it be Modern Warfare or Black Ops?

Personally, I think the Black Ops games are way more captivating from a storytelling standpoint, whereas the Modern Warfare games tend to be a bit more generic. Unfortunately, I feel like the “modern” aesthetic will be easier to translate to a wider audience, so if I had to bet on it, I’d say we’ll be seeing Captain Price and company.

The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started. Our shared goal is quite simple — to create an unforgettable blockbuster movie experience that our community loves, and one that also excites and inspires new fans of the franchise.”
