Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s DLC maps and modes won’t be timed exclusives like before

Although PS4 players will have some sort of perk

Activision’s insistence on orchestrating timed-exclusive DLC seemed like one of those things that was bound to mildly annoy us until the end of time, but at least in the case of this year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, there’s some respite. Given the cross-play nature of the game, Activision has committed to releasing “most post-launch gameplay content” simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

In a blog post detailing how cross-play works (more on that in a second), the publisher said that DLC including “multiplayer maps, new multiplayer modes, special ops missions, and more will release simultaneously across all platforms.” Specifics will be shared closer to launch, and there’s talk of – here we go! an “exciting Day 1 advantage” for Modern Warfare players on PS4. Same as it ever was.

Cynicism aside, I do genuinely like the sound of cross-play. Under the current opt-in structure, there are three types of matches: controller only, mouse and keyboard only (which can include PS4 and Xbox One), and both inputs. The latter lobbies have “no control scheme filters, allowing you to play with players using both controllers and/or KBM across up to all three supported platforms.”

The only caveat is that you’ll need to use a COD Account to manage cross-platform friends/parties. Also worth noting: “there are no plans currently” for cross-play in Ranked or competitive tournaments.

Our first real look at cross-play will come well before the game’s launch. Infinity Ward is looking to test cross-platform functionality in the Modern Warfare beta beginning Thursday, September 19.
