In the first of what appears to be a series of upcoming developer diaries, Splash Damage lays out the groundwork for what makes the narrative of its upcoming first-person shooter, Brink, tick.

It’s 2045 and ecological unrest forces folks to take refuge on a floating city known as The Ark. Designed as a clean and green living alternative, The Ark was built to house 5,000 people. So I guess it’s a problem that it’s now home to some 50,000 folks, as everyone is running out of not only space to live, but essential day-to-day supplies. The result? People start shooting at each other.

Brink let’s you choose sides from the very start, which Splash Damage says will determine how the game’s conflict will play out. Will you side with the Resistance, refugee freedom fighters? Or will you take up with the Security whose job it is to keep order in a fragile society on the brink of collapse? Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Who cares!? Everything will get shot!

Brink is out next spring for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Looks good to me — digging the stylized caricature-like player models over the highly detailed, realistic environments. What do you think?
