Bloodroots has blink-and-you’ll-miss-it combat

Momentum is key in this PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch game

Bloodroots caught our attention back in 2018 with its frenetic pace and improvisational combat featuring ladders, among other random objects. Now, it’s ready to test us. The action game lands on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC (via the Epic Games Store) on February 28, 2020, for $19.99.

The style is crisp in motion, and that’s a high point, but my favorite part is how suddenly Mr. Wolf can vault from foe to foe like it’s nothing. In the right hands, this is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Bloodroots seems like it could have that Hotline Miami effect where I have my preferred approach, and it works for me, but I also want to see how other people make use of the space and tools around them.

As for the plot, it’s a classic revenge tale full of nicknamed characters like Mr. Boar and Ms. Bison.

“Think Kill Bill meets The Revenant, and spice it up with a lot of Jackie Chan,” according to Paper Cult co-founder Raph Toulouse. “When you eventually take down your enemies, their ghosts appear by your campfire and retell stories of the past, offering glimpses of their backstory.” On the flip side, impatient players can choose to skip through these story moments and keep the frantic action going.

Looks pretty cool!
