Developer has cut the staff on the project
We hardly know anything about Blizzard’s new MMO, potentially dubbed Titan, the long awaited follow up to their hugely successful World of Warcraft. But we now know that it is unlikely it will be in our hands until at least 2016. GamesBeat is reporting that the number of staff working on the project has been cut from 100 to 70 and that staff are being re-assigned to other projects.
One has to wonder if this stepping back from Titan isn’t a sign of Blizzard changing its plans for Titan. Despite dwindling numbers of subscribers to World of Warcraft, it’s still the top dog in the MMO market that publishers still foolishly try to match. Delaying the game another three years will allow Blizzard to evaluate whether there is a market for this type of MMO, not least an MMO with a paid subscription.
In a statement, Blizzard spokesman Shon Damron has said “We’ve always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception. We’re using this opportunity to shift some of our resources to assist with other projects while the core team adapts our technology and tools to accommodate these new changes. Note that we haven’t announced any dates for the MMO.”
With Heathstone and a StarCraft II expansion still to be released, Blizzard still has plenty going on but it looks like it’ll be a while before we see anything of their new MMO.
