Blizzard talks StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm

The first of many details surrounding StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm have come out, courtesy of MTV Multiplayer. While Wings of Liberty is still eating up much of our free time, it’s never too early to ask — especially when it comes to the design philosophy of Blizzard — what’s ahead of us.

Executive VP of game design Rob Pardo has the answers. “It’s hard to imagine doing a Zerg-based campaign the same way [as the Terran story] or, for that matter, doing a Protoss one.”

“We really want to make each racial experience feel true to the race and feel interesting, so I think there will be some similar stuff and some stuff that really diverges to make sense for the race.”

More quotes regarding “sequel vs. expansion” talk and the state of development can be found below.

“From a single-player point of view, they’re going to kind of feel like sequels. It’s going to be a pretty meaningful amount of content,” says Pardo. “There will definitely be additions to multiplayer, but that’s going to feel like an expansion set.”

And as for a status update on Heart of the Storm, well, this is Blizzard we’re talking about here.

“We’re just now getting serious about breaking ground. We always have a lot of ideas and there’s been some design work on it, but hardcore art and programming is just now starting to begin. It’s too early to estimate, but as soon as we can get them out there, we’d love to.”

It’s a good thing Wings of Liberty is as massive as it is content-wise, otherwise I’d be in serious pain after hearing some of these comments. Godspeed, Blizzard.
