At BlizzCon today, we finally got to see a new StarCraft game for the first time in over a decade. Geared for 2030, this title will ditch the RTS side of the franchise and embrace a boots-on-the-ground perspective, with the first StarCraft in nearly 20 years now being a shooter.
With a brutal cinematic trailer, Blizzard has officially announced the first new StarCraft game since StarCraft 2, though this time it will be a shooter rather than a real-time strategy title. In the trailer, we see a bunch of human soldiers touch down on an alien world, all snarky and smug, with their grins wiped as soon as they lay eyes on the impossible swarm of the Zerg.
The trailer is bloody, intense, and without any filters, staying true to the art direction and vibes of the original StarCraft titles. If you didn’t know, StarCraft basically came to be as an unofficial adaptation of Warhammer 40,000, contrasted with WarCraft doing the same with Warhammer Fantasy. However, though the latter diverged severely since, StarCraft maintained a lot of similarity to Warhammer, and this trailer is, again, quite similar in vibe and atmosphere to what we see coming out of that universe.
And that’s not a bad thing – it just means Warhammer fans once more have another great game coming their way, on top of what we’ve already been seeing with Space Marine, Total War, and Dawn of War.
However, it’s not going to launch anytime soon. StarCraft is coming out in 2030 at the earliest, so buckle up.
