Improving your car in Over the Hill is crucial if you want to make past all the available maps. Every map has a unique challenge, and the advanced ones get progressively harder.
You can’t get every upgrade simultaneously, and you should be really picky about your choices. In this guide, I will discuss the best ones to pick early.
Best upgrades in Over the Hill
To get any upgrade, you’ll need to spend in-game currency. Every upgrade also has advanced levels that make them more impactful.

- Inventory: having tools for your car is absolutely crucial because you can get stuck in a bad zone easily. When you create a new save, you will have only one tool slot, but you will have more tools to equip. Hence, getting the first inventory upgrade is absolutely necessary since you can carry at least two tools at all times. This is also a much more purposeful upgrade than the engine, since you won’t need the top speed right away.

- Winch: The Winch is essentially a get-out-of-jail card that allows you to outmanoeuvre the terrain. Suppose you have got stuck in the mud. If there is a tree in front of you, you can use the Winch to pull yourself out. Hence, increasing the range is an absolute necessity since you can target tree barks that are far away from where you are.

- Tires: when you start driving a vehicle, you will clearly notice the lack of control. I have been playing this game with a wheel, and the driving is pretty rough. This is not a surprise because the basic tires are terrible. Having more control in a game that’s all about driving rough terrain is necessary, so upgrading your wheel is a must.
Once you’re past the starter stage, try to improve the engine power since you’ll require the additional torque and top speed. If you really want to avoid any upgrade, I will choose Protection. Over the Hill isn’t a racing game. You can be slow and careful to ensure that your vehicle avoids taking any damage.
