Prepare for some tedious farming.

Before you keep reading, check if you have the minimum requirements to complete this quest. You’ll need the Desert map on any tier and the Thorns Tome or Athena, preferably both. Athena gains two points of Thorns with every level, so using her lets you deal Thorns damage to Cactus even if you don’t find the Thorns Tome. If you don’t have her, the only way to get Thorns is with the Thorns Tome.

Athena is the best character to complete this quest with because her Lock In skill, which gives her two Thorns per level, saves you the headache of trying to drop a Thorns Tome. If you haven’t unlocked her, you can try this quest with Sir Oofie due to his Armor.

Armor, Thorns, Regen, and Shield Tome are the best choices to complete the Cactus quest. Thorns will deal more damage to Cactus, letting you kill them faster and take less damage in the process. Armor will reduce damage taken, which is essential for Thorns builds. Shield is great for the extra total health, and Regen is a must if you want a safe way to heal at low health.

Borgar, Oats, and Medkit are all health and healing items that synergize well with this Thorns build. The Epic Spiky Shield works well with Sir Oofie, since it gives Thorns with Armor. If you can find a Campfire, it’s also useful since you want to stand still and make it easy for every Cactus to reach you.

Important tips to complete the Cactus quest

  • Cactus spawns are partly random. Not every Desert run will spawn a Cactus, and spawns change every minute in the early game. However, if you see no Cactus two minutes into a game, reset, because that means it will not spawn on that run.
  • Have as few weapons and attack speed as possible. The more weapons you have, the higher the chances they will kill Cactus before your Thorns damage.
  • Lifesteal doesn’t heal with Thorns damage, which means you need to keep an eye on healing items and HP Regen upgrades to survive as long as possible using Thorns. You can still pick Bloody Tome for Lifesteal from weapon hits, though.
