Best races for the Warlock class in Baldur’s Gate 3

You can be whatever you like.

The Warlock is one of the most traditional classes you can pick in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you want a powerful magical class with three vastly different subclasses and a whole lot of firepower, this is the one for you. But some players might be wondering what the best race is for a Warlock in Baldur’s Gate 3.

At the end of the day, this might be a cheesy answer, but you can ultimately pick whatever race you want as a Warlock, as the stat differences between most races aren’t significant enough in Baldur’s Gate 3. I’m playing a Warlock right now in a co-op multiplayer session with some family and I chose to be a Dragonborn for fun.

If there is a race you prefer, choose that one for your Warlock and don’t look back, even if it sounds weird like a Half-Orc Warlock. That said, if you aren’t sure what race you want to choose, here are some of the suggestions I have for you.

High Elf

While all elven races have an affinity for magic, the High Elf is particularly notable. Not only will you get some solid stats that will set you up well for being a Warlock, but you’ll also get an additional Cantrip for free. This will help you greatly, as you’ll be able to cast another spell, such as Fire Bolt, as many times as you want in battle.

Githyanki

The Githyanki might be one of the stranger races in the game, but it makes for a surprisingly great Warlock. Their affinity for the Astral Plane gives them a solid edge on the magical side. But the most important aspect is its great balance between magic and martial arts.

This makes for a solid race and class combo that can use a variety of weapons while also specializing in magic. If you want a more uniquely melee-focused Warlock, this is the one to pick.

High Half-Elf

Like the High Elf, the High Half-Elf is a very similar situation. Its stats work well for magic, but the difference is it trades some of that in exchange for physical prowess. You have weapon proficiency with spears, halberds, etc, plus the free extra Cantrip like the High Elf.

Mephistopheles Tiefling

This particular sub-race of the devilish Tiefling is the prime choice if you wish to summon the fires of hell as a Warlock. You automatically gain access to the classic Burning Hands spell and the Legacy of Cania: Flame Blade, which free you up to pick other spells to complement them.

In addition, the natural fire resistance means you’ll also have solid defense against enemy spellcasters and Warlocks.
