How to Fish has several useful items and upgrades to purchase to help you on your fishing adventures. While you can always purchase every available item and upgrade, that will require an incredible amount of grind.
Instead, you can make things easier by purchasing the most important items.
Best How to Fish items and upgrades
All items and upgrades (if applicable) have their respective use. There are no ‘useless’ purchase. In this guide, I have prioritized those purchases that are absolutely necessary.

- Radar: Available for just $10, the Radar is pretty significant unless you want to lose your way in the ocean. There are different islands to explore, and sailing blindly can be dangerous and a waste of time. While the Radar doesn’t pinpoint you to any location, it’s a nice help to have.
- Boat upgrades: Once you’re past the early stages of the game, you’ll be traveling across different locations. Since you can’t fly like a magician, getting upgrades for your boat is necessary. However, wait to get the upgrades, as it’s necessary to get better weapons first.
- Dynamite: For $25, you have one of the laziest and most effective ways to fish in the game. If you would rather not waste hours catching the smaller fish with your rod. While blasting the fish reduces their sell value, you can grill them to get a price modifier.
For weapons, there are two clear choices.

- The Shotgun costs just $150, so it’s cheap to acquire. However, you can power it up greatly by upgrading its bullets. The upgrades can be expensive, but they’re required for the endgame.
- The Assault Rifle is expensive, and getting all the upgrade modules is even more so. However, you’ll need this gun before you face off against the whale, who is the final boss to defeat.
Anything else you don’t find on this guide can be bought, but it’s up to you. How to Fish isn’t a long game, so it might be worth not min-maxing your spend unless you’re looking to finish it in less than an hour.
