One of the key aspects of increasing your chances for a successful run in Monster Train 2 is to get your clan combinations right.
There are five clans available in the game (three of them are locked at the start of the game), and in every run, you get to select two. Not all clans work well together, so it’s important to get your choices right.
This guide will provide you with the best combinations as you progress through the game.
Best Monster Train 2 clan combination for beginners
As a beginner, you’ll only have access to two clans: Banished and Pyreborne. Interestingly, this is the best combination of clans to use until you have played more and unlocked the Lazarus League clan.

- Select Banished as your Primary because Fel is incredibly strong.
- Pyreborne will automatically become your secondary.
- Your deck will work on the Shift mechanism. Shift is applied whenever a unit moves inside a room. For most Banished units, the Shift ability will combine with increasing Valor stacks. Valor stacks up to increase the Armor and Strike of a unit, and the upgrade is permanent (it doesn’t reset on a fresh turn).
- You’ll want to add a few Pyreborne units, as they will apply Pyregel. Pyregel stacks determine how much additional damage an enemy will take. Ideally, go for a 2:1 ratio (for every two Banished units picked on the draft, pick a Pyreborne unit).
- Make sure to upgrade all your Banished units first before focusing on Pyreborne units.
- Look for Artifacts that either add units on every floor or increase the size of your floors.
That’s pretty much how you can master the combination of Banished and Pyreborne in the game. Both clans are pretty simple to understand, which makes them the best combination for beginners.
Best Monster Train 2 clan combination
The Luna Coven and Lazarus League combo is incredibly strong and arguably the best in Monster Train 2. Both Luna Coven and Lazarus League clans are very powerful alone, but the two can combine to create unbelievable combos.

- Set the Lazarus League as your primary and Luna Coven as the secondary.
- The backbone of Lazarus League units is Unstable and Incant. Incant applies an effect whenever a spell is played on the room, and the applied effect will mostly be Unstable.
- Unstable is my favorite in-game effect. Whenever an enemy’s health falls below the Unstable stacks at the end of a turn, they will die. The extra Unstable stacks will either transfer onto surrounding enemies or convert into damage on them.
- Luna Coven’s greatest strength is the heavy reliance on Spells. This fits perfectly well with the Incant ability of the Lazarus League units.
- Your priority is to pick as many Lazarus League units as possible and upgrade the Luna Coven spells. This is the best combination to employ if you want the highest chances of success on your run.
The Luna Coven and Lazarus League combo is far more potent than Banished and Pyreborne, but the system is complex. It might take some time for you to master the mechanics, but this was the first combo that helped me to beat the game and unlock the Endless mode.
