If Revolution Software makes a million, we get the sequel
Revolution Software has received all the funding it needs to make Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse. However, the team has introduced a range of extra stretch goals, including an entirely separate game. If the studio makes $1 million, it will not only make Serpent’s Curse, it’ll do Beneath A Steel Sky 2 as well.
I love Beneath A Steel Sky. It’s weird, witty, and impossible to forget. You can even download it for free on GOG to see that I’m absolutely right.
It’s certainly an interesting way to greenlight a sequel, although our own Allistair Pinsoff believes it’s a rather sleazy tactic on par with what major publishers do. I’m on the fence about that, myself. I can see where he’s coming from, but I can also view this as a studio simply having found itself a spotlight and using that spotlight to gain enough money to afford two game projects instead of one.
It’s not like, say, holding an announced game to ransom by guilt-tripping folks into buying something else.
In any case, I never thought I’d be able to type the words Beneath A Steel Sky 2 with any serious belief that it could be a real thing, so this is a net win for me.
