BattleForge adopts the Play4Free model

EA Phenomic’s card-based real-time strategy game BattleForge can now be downloaded for free, no strings attached! The game is still being offered at retail, with the incentive to pay being extra cards and lots of BattleForge Points.

I often wonder how well in-game microtransactions perform, and in the case of BattleForge, it looks they bring in enough money to justify getting the game out to as many people as possible, no matter the cost. First it was Battlefield Heroes, and now this. Could we be seeing a trend here? I certainly hope so!
