It’s already making waves
It’s been just about a year since we last talked about Audiosurf Air, the followup to 2008’s wildly popular “ride your own music” game Audiosurf. Courtesy of Rock, Paper, Shotgun, we have a bit of gameplay footage, and it appears that Air is taking the “surf” in Audiosurf literally this time around.
The video starts with a familiar scene: a three-lane highway with colored gems to collect. Instead of controlling a vehicle viewed from above, the action in Air is viewed more closely to the highway, from a first-person perspective. At around 0:42, a special gem that adds more gems shows up. Then at 0:49 things take a strange turn. It’s clear why this one is called Audiosurf Air, at least.
Initial fan reaction is mixed, at best. Where Air‘s official website describes the ability to “fly up into the feeling of your music and soar,” some fans of the original only see avoidance of difficult sections with a mode whose mechanics aren’t entirely clear but don’t appear to require much thought or skill. We’ll have to get our hands on it before making any final judgments, of course.
Though no official launch date is known, the trailer suggests Audiosurf Air is set to release “soon.”
