Apex Legends update includes weapon balances and bug fixes

Large Rig hitboxes under consideration

Team members behind Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale title Apex Legends took to Reddit yesterday to discuss a new update, that has gone live across all platforms for the free-to-play title. Apex Legends is currently tearing it up online, with a recorded 50 million players dropping in since its launch just over a month ago.

The new update seems to be mostly focused on weapon balancing, which includes both damage and Rate of Fire alterations to weapons such as the Peacekeeper and the Wingman. In discussing the philosophy of weapon balancing, Respawn note that some weapons are being kept weak-but-viable intentionally, as they want the nature of battle royale to create a specific “power curve” among the looted arsenal. So, think Battle Royale (the movie), where one guy got an Uzi, while someone else got a pot lid.

Going forward, Respawn also want to look into character hitboxes, not only in the sense of fixing those that are broken, but also in helping their tank – or “Large Rig” – characters feel more like monsters, by tightening up their hitboxes or, as a last resort, simply applying more damage reduction to their health.

Along with explanations of the new update, the Reddit article is an interesting looking into the philosophy behind Apex Legends, how the game’s meta has already changed multiple times since release, and what Respawn hope for its players experience in future. You can check the patch notes out right here.

Apex Legends is available now on PS4, PC and Xbox One.
