Respawn Entertainment is bringing its shooter expertise to the battle royale genre. EA and Respawn have just revealed Apex Legends, a free-to-play squad-based battle royale that’s available to download right now.

Apex Legends puts teams of three on the battlefield against one another. Kings Canyon is the only map at launch, but Respawn is creating more. Team composition is important, as there are eight character classes to choose from. (Although, they have to be gradually unlocked; one character costs 12,000 Legend Tokens in the game’s store.) For instance, the Bloodhound can track recent enemy activity; the Lifeline is a medic with healing abilities. It’s battle royale by way of the hero shooter.

Apex Legends piggybacks off Respawn’s most popular franchise in that it’s set within the Titanfall universe. But there don’t seem to be many similarities beyond that. However, Apex Legends does attempt to bring new systems to battle royale. Locations called Respawn Beacons can be used once to revive dead teammates. There’s also a gear optimization system that automatically equips the best stuff in the inventory.

You can make the call as to whether this is your cup of tea. Apex Legends is available now on PC (through Origin), PS4, and Xbox One. In the game’s FAQ, Respawn mentions cross-play isn’t supported yet. As is the case with most every free-to-play game, it has some microtransactions as a form of monetization.
