Apex Legends is bringing back Solos alongside twisted trickster Alter

Solos hasn't been a thing since 2019.

Respawn has shared official details for season 21 of Apex Legends, including its subtitle: Upheaval. Aside from introducing fans to the newest playable Legend—Alter—Respawn’s also confirmed that it’s bringing back the game’s short-lived Solos mode.

In case you missed out on it the first time, Solos is fundamentally the same as Apex Legends‘ main battle royale mode, except players aren’t divided into teams, turning matches into free-for-alls. Respawn’s website currently hasn’t gone into any further detail on the mode’s inclusion, but it has been rumored that Solos will be a permanent addition this time around. Originally, Solos was only available for two weeks in August 2019. After nearly five years, I’m sure some players have been hankering for it again. If it does stick around, it could help attract new players who prefer solo play over teaming up with others.

Either way, the reintroduction of Solos is thematically appropriate considering the season’s new Legend doesn’t come across like a team player. Alter’s character trailer quickly establishes her as an agent of chaos as it shows her go on a killing spree while rattling off multiple conflicting backstories for herself, ranging from betrayed assassin to mahjong champion to… baby bird? Her character bio on the official website provides a bit more info though Alter remains a mysterious figure. All we know is that she can hop between dimensions, she has a strong interest in visiting worlds on the brink of total destruction, and she seems to have some connection to fellow Legend Horizon if the photo she drops in her trailer is anything to go by.

The trailer doesn’t show any gameplay, but it does give fans an idea of what Alter’s abilities might be like. Her scorpion-like tail could be used to bind enemy players and she’s bound to use portals to move around the arena. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait too long to find out since a gameplay trailer is scheduled for Friday, May 3. Hopefully, this will also share a few more details about the season’s content and Respawn’s plans for Solos.
