Alone in the Dark Deluxe Edition comes with a “nostalgic 1992” option

We didn't need millions of polygons back in those days!

Outside of Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark is one of the most influential survival horror games of all time. While we wait for Pieces Interactive’s take on the upcoming reimagining, THQ Nordic has shown what you can expect if you opt for the special version of the game.

Over on the publisher’s YouTube channel (as spotted by Bloody Disgusting), we get a little showcase on the Alone in the Dark bonuses that come with the Deluxe Edition. For starters, there are some “authentic Vintage Horror Filters,” as well as the director’s commentary, if that’s your thing.

But the one that will strike a chord with older fans is the “1992 Costume Pack.” This – as the name implies – gives the new game the same, low-poly look that the original AITD release had all the way back in the early 90s.

“Ma’am, please stop staring at my triangular nose.”

Specifically, it affects the models, turning them from their more modern, highly detailed selves to how they originally looked. It’s a nice little way of seeing just how far we’ve come in terms of video game visuals. Also, nostalgia. Nostalgia is good as well.

While it’s been tough for Alone in the Dark to keep its head above the water – what with some mediocre reboots and new installments – this could be the one that reignites interest in the iconic series once more.

I’ll tell you for why: For me, personally, this latest attempt to breathe new life into the franchise has been penned by Mikael Hedberg. Even if you don’t recognize the name, horror fans will know his work from Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Amnesia: Rebirth, and – more importantly – SOMA. That’s enough to get me excited for March 20, at least.
