The rarest piece of metal in Eora

Across the different maps in the Living Lands in Avowed, you can randomly come across an item called the “Fragment of Starmetal.” Once you find this item, it begins the “Forged of Star-Stuff” quest, which can’t be completed until you reach the final map in the game.

As you’ll soon learn, there is more than just one Fragment of Starmetal in Avowed, and they’re all needed for the quest. So where can you find all the Fragments of Starmetal?

Fragment of Starmetal locations in Avowed

In total, there are four pieces of Starmetal you can find and loot in Avowed. All are required to finish the Forged of Star-Stuff side quest, which you can complete by visiting Forgemaster Dela in the basement of Solace Keep in Galawain’s Tusks. However, you really only need one or two Fragments of Starmetal to get the weapons the forgemaster can make you.

The four Fragments of Starmetal in Avowed are located across each map in the game. One piece is located on each map, so to acquire all four, you have to visit all four maps in the Living Lands. The maps are unlocked by progressing the story in Avowed, and the order of the maps is: Dawnshore, Emerald Stair, Shatterscarp, and Galawain’s Tusks.

You’re able to pick up the Fragment of Starmetal as soon as you enter each region, so none of them are locked behind any story content. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’re easy to find, so you might need a helping hand. Below, I’ll give you the exact location of each Fragment of Starmetal piece in Avowed.

Dawnshore Fragment of Starmetal location

As you might expect, we’ll start with the first map you unlock in Avowed: Dawnshore. For this Fragment of Starmetal, you need to head right near the entrance to Emerald Stair. While you can’t visit Emerald Stair until the Paradis Ambassador gives you the go-ahead, nothing prevents you from going to the gate before that happens.

Head southwest of the Emerald Stair Gatehouse on the southeastern side of Dawnshore. Here, you’ll find a location called the “Godless Altar.” In the center of the location, you’ll find an altar that has the Fragment of Starmetal piece sitting on top of it. Grab the piece and then finish the events of the story in Dawnshore or head to Emerald Stair for the next piece.

Emerald Stair Fragment of Starmetal location

The next region in Avowed is Emerald Stair, and its Fragment of Starmetal piece isn’t too difficult to find, but it is guarded by a strong enemy. To find the piece, head to the Damp Burrow location on your map, which is right in the center of the Rolling Crags region to the northeast of Fior mes Iverno. There’s a Damp Burrow Party Camp fast travel point for easy access if you have it unlocked.

At the Damp Burrow, you need to go just southeast of the main house in the area. Look for a small patch of water and go to the south of it. Here, you’ll find a troll enemy named Iscern in a cave that you can either try to beat or simply go around to get to the Fragment of Starmetal. The piece is sitting on the ground near the back entrance to the cave. It’s lying in the center of purple stardust, so it’s hard to miss once you’re in the cave.

Shatterscarp Fragment of Starmetal location

Next up is the dangerous region of Shatterscarp, which is the third map you unlock in Avowed. Here, the Fragment of Starmetal piece is located in an extremely precarious spot and you’d really only ever look here if you were specifically searching for the piece.

To start, fast travel to the Party Camp waystone just beneath the Abandoned Mine location north of Thirdborn. From the waystone, travel northwest along the road parallel to the Abandoned Mine. Along the rock wall where the Abandoned Mine is located, search for a small crevice you can crawl into, which leads you straight into the mine. From here, travel up by hopping on rocks and the various ladders and wood planks.

Your goal is to reach the southern side of the mine across from where all the wood scaffolding is located. At the very top of the south side of the mine are rocks and a plateau where you can find the Fragment of Starmetal piece sitting on the ground. Use the map screenshot below as a guide to see exactly where you need to go in the mine.

Galawain’s Tusks Fragment of Starmetal location

At long last, the final Fragment of Starmetal piece location is on the final map, Galawain’s Tusks. Fortunately, the piece is located in a fairly simple spot on the map. However, it will take quite a while to reach it, as Galawain’s Tusks is a large map and the Starmetal piece isn’t lootable until you reach the end of the region.

You can find the Fragment of Starmetal in Galawain’s Tusks near the Ash Forest part of the map. Ash Forest is found northwest of Solace Keep, which is almost as far north as you can go in the region. In Ash Forest, head directly to the left of the word “Ash” on your map.

Here, you’ll find the “Revenant” bounty, which you can claim in Solace Keep to give you a little extra help on where to go. The Fragment of Starmetal piece is located in the middle of a red meteor crater on the ground. Once you pick up the piece, the Revenant boss spawns and you’re forced to kill it or run away. Look at the map screenshot below to see exactly where to go in Ash Forest to find the piece.

And that’s all four Fragment of Starmetal pieces you can find in Avowed. By bringing all four pieces to Forgemaster Dela in Solace Keep, you can acquire a unique Arquebus and a unique one-handed sword. The weapons take one Starmetal each, but you can bring one additional piece to the forgemaster and have them upgrade each weapon for you once. This improves the stats of the weapons and gives them a new name. Delivering all four pieces is the only way to complete the Forged of Star-Stuff quest.

Personally, I think the unique Arquebus, named Moonstrike/Heavenstrike, is the best overall weapon in Avowed. So, if you’re only looking for one weapon out of the Starmetal pieces, I would go for that one, but it’s ultimately up to you.
