Elusive little critters

Fields of Mistria is a cozy life sim with a hint of magic, and there is never a shortage of things to do while wandering around the pixel world created by NPC Studios. If you’re a bit of a completionist, you’re likely working your way through the ever-growing list of Museum Collections.

As of the second major update, a new area called the Deep Woods was added to Fields of Mistria, adding three new collections to the Museum, including the Deep Woods Insect Set. Catching insects doesn’t sound like the hardest of tasks, but it’s difficult for many players, especially the elusive Singing Kaydid.

Before you can even think about catching any of the Deep Woods insects, you’ll need to do a couple of things:

As with all collections at the Museum in Fields of Mistria, there are five insects to collect. They each have specific spawning conditions and, realistically, should not be hard to find. However, even the common insects listed below are proving to be less common than general insects, so perseverance and daily visits to the Deep Woods are both key here.

The new insects added to the Deep Woods area are supposed to be multi-season insects, so you don’t need to worry too much about the time of year when you go bug hunting. However, I have found through my own experience that they don’t tend to spawn at all during Winter. This doesn’t mean they won’t; it’s just that it’s incredibly rare.

Here are all of the Deep Woods insects and their spawning conditions:

If you’re struggling to get any of the above insects to spawn, remember you can leave the Deep Woods via either the main entrance to the south or by going into Caldarus’ Temple, then re-enter the Deep Woods themselves to force spawn different fish and bugs.

I’ve also found that shaking trees, breaking rocks, and cutting down the long grass in the area can all potentially spawn the insects above. It’s usually the Loam Caterpillar that will appear, but at least it’s something. And if you’re around late at night searching for the Mote Firefly, you can use the teleport in Caldarus’ Shrine to quickly get back to your Farm and avoid passing out.

Should you upgrade your net in Fields of Mistria?

When visiting the Blacksmith, you may be tempted to upgrade your net. Upgrading tools is a no-brainer, usually, with higher quality tools performing better and offering perks. However, the same does not apply to the net.

Upgrading your net will result in no improvements other than the aesthetic appearance of the tool. A Gold Net offers no benefit over a Worn Net. Sure, it looks prettier, but you’ll need to fork over 40 Gold Ore to make one or pay 4,000 Tesserae to buy one. The only reason to upgrade your Net is if you want a matching set of tools, which is a perfectly reasonable goal, but maybe wait until you don’t need the resources for your other tools or armor.

In short, the original net that you’re rewarded with for completing the story quest “Something’s Bugging Me” with Luc at the very beginning of a playthrough will see you through until the very end of the story, so you can save some resources or funds by not upgrading it.
