Gone are the days of only having the option to play as Mario, Luigi, or one of two damned Toads. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is providing us with 12 playable characters, which makes it a veritable Mario Party, if you will. So who’s going to be there? This is a list of all the characters:
Mario
You can’t have a Super Mario Bros. Game without Mario. That would make it more like Super Luigi U. Good times. Anyway, the red-garbed plumber is one of the most recognizable characters in all of video games. He’s practically the spokesperson for our hobby, which is a shame because he mostly just says “wahoo!”
Luigi
Luigi is the character I’m playing as, so you can just scooch your cursor off of him right now. Don’t you dare touch him, I swear. We aren’t starting until I’m locked in as Luigi, so you’d better just pick someone else.
Peach
The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, the best thing the Super Mario Bros. Movie did was make her something other than a vacuous cake-lover. I’m not sure if that’s going to translate into Super Mario Bros. Wonder, but we can hope.
Daisy
This alternate princess first appeared in Super Mario Land for the Game Boy. She’s a lot like Peach but obnoxiously boisterous. You might remember her screaming at you in Mario Kart.
Yellow and Blue Toad
These two first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and were quickly assigned to the least popular people in your friend group. I’m not sure how we ended up with them. Even now, I can’t help but be annoyed that it’s not Captain Toad in this role. Or Wario and Waluigi. Instead, Nintendo gave us not one but two of the most nobody characters in the entire series.
Toadette
At least we get Toadette. She’s not my favorite character since she brings all the same luggage that Smurfette does to the Smurfs. All things considered, Toads just procreate through spores, and she’s the only one who identifies as female for personal reasons. I can respect that, at least.
Green, Red, Yellow, and light-blue Yoshi
There are four flavors of Yoshi in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and while in Super Mario World they all had different powers, they’re all the same here. However, if you pick a Yoshi, they won’t die when hit, only if they fall down a pit. They also can’t use power-ups, which is a bit of a drag. Meanwhile, other players can jump on their back and get carried over hazards. This feature makes Yoshi a useful character for both your unpopular friends and the more skilled players who get tired of watching the less-skilled players fall down holes.
Nabbit
Nabbit first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. U and became playable in New Super Luigi U. Like Yoshi, Nabbit isn’t hurt by something entering their personal space. However, they can’t carry someone on their back. That’s a shame because it would be hilarious if a player could jump into their sack. Missed opportunity if you ask me.
