It’s clear from this panel at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival that the creators of the hit show Adventure Time really loves videogames. There are a lot of name drops here in terms of gaming’s influence on the show; Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Day of the Tentacle, and especially Minecraft. They even threw out some ideas for what they’d want the Adventure Time game to play like. A few of the guys struggled with the answer, but not series creator Pendleton Ward. Without missing a beat, he comes out with “Katamari graphics with Monster Hunter–style gameplay”. This is right after Mr. Ward has already re-pledged his interest in making videogames himself. It’s clear that he’s already given a lot of thought into what he wants out of Adventure Time‘s inevitable jump to the gaming world, and that he intends to make those plans a reality.
As much as I love Guillermo Del Toro, I have to say that out of all the Hollywood-types out there, Pendleton Ward is the one I’d most trust to make a quality videogame. I just hope some smart, sassy game publisher has the guts to give the guy a mutli-million dollar budget and the total creative freedom he deserves.
