A Place for the Unwilling is a chill adventure with a dash of cosmic horror

Making my way downtown

Video games that revolve around strict time tables tend to make me anxious, but this one a narrative-driven adventure called A Place for the Unwilling looks a little more chill, at least up front. You’ve got exactly three weeks to explore and carve your own path during the final days of a dying city.

The stand-out element here has got to be the art direction (that’s what grabbed my attention in the first place), but there are also curious nods that not everything is as it seems. Case in point, ALPixel Games says A Place for the Unwilling is “set in a Dickensian world of colour and Eldritch nightmares.”

More than anything, this seems like a cozy game that rewards players who pay attention to their surroundings. The developers are promising “over 100 narrative events” and there are no quest markers to speak of. It’ll truly be on us, the players, to make sure we’re in the right place at the right time.

For a more in-depth overview, check this six-minute gameplay trailer that illustrates how the first day can go. A Place for the Unwilling will be out soon enough – look for it on Steam on July 25.
