Sony is all about telling you how successful their platforms are, and how long you’re going to enjoy playing them. The PSP is no exception. They’re not about to tell you to stop buying and playing PSP games, even with their new portable, codenamed NGP, on the horizon.
Sony’s worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida wants the PSP to live forever, even if you’re already moving onto the NGP in your mind. He says that the two portables will co-exist on the market, and some of that has to do with pricing.
“I think the NGP needs time to mature and get adopted by users. So, for the time being, both platforms will coexist,” Yoshida tells CVG.
Yoshida on the NGP: “It can’t replace a platform that has already been on sale for seven years now. In terms of pricing, we can’t sell the NGP for the same price as a PSP. The PSP has become very affordable and popular, especially with younger generations.”
He can say they’ll “co-exist,” but co-existing and both being on store shelves are two different things. The NGP is so dreamy that I don’t see anyone wanting to play their PSP.
