Champions Online goes free to play on January 25

Atari and Cryptic have announced that its online massively multiplayer online game, Champions Online, will go free to play on January 25.

The free to play service was announced some months back, and everything will be free of charge save for the game’s special “Adventure Packs.” Cryptic and Atari are pushing that the fact that you won’t need a credit card or subscription to participate, although premium content can be purchased from the game’s C-Store.

Great timing with this announcement, as Sony Online Entertainment has just today shipped and launched DC Universe Online for PC and PlayStation 3. That game, of course, requires a subscription. And with Champions Online having a few years to iterate, that puts Atari and Cryptic at an interesting advantage.

Anyone interested in trying out Champions Online now that it’s going free?
