Hands-on with Dead Space 2’s Puker

Last time we checked out Dead Space 2′s multiplayer, we were impressed with the Left 4 Dead-influenced survival modes. While the Humans versus Necromorphs gameplay doesn’t leave for variety of modes, the core gameplay looks like a solid griefing opportunity for gamers who would rather see the bad guys dismember the good ones. Before last night, we hadn’t played the newest Necromorph class, the Puker.

Pretty much every Necromorph option plays off a member of a family, with the baby-shaped Lurker, the child-like Pack and the female Spitter, but we had never gotten hands-on with the big daddy, the Puker. Bigger than the Spitter, the Puker is probably the most directly powerful Necromorph choice. He also poses a threat from up close and far off.

While he’s a bigger and easier target for the humans than the projectilist Lurker, hiding up on an overhang and raining vomit is a great method to rack up damage. Running directly up to a retreating Human to puke on them, then going crazy with a volley of slashes is equally effective. Like all the Necromorph classes, if you can get close enough for a grab, the Puker can perform a one-hit kill, the now-famous “puke down the throat of the human.”

All in all, the the Puker should be a great final addition to the multiplayer mode. It fits perfectly within the Dead Space universe, and it’s nice to have more than three enemies to shoot. Dead Space 2 will be coming out January 25, 2010.
