Fieldrunners Android out now, free on Amazon Appstore

Finally, after a few delays and some controversy, Subatomic’s Fieldrunners HD for the Android OS is now available.

There’s two ways to get it, depending on where you call home. if you’re in the United States, it’s the free app of the day on the Amazon Appstore. If you’re not in the US, you can find Fieldrunners HD on the Android Market for a buck. These are day-one deals — tomorrow the app will go up to its regular price of $2.99.

Subatomic had originally planned to release the tower defense game free for all on its first day of release, but ran into a snag with Google’s terms regarding pricing changes on the Market. Its original solution was to partner with Amazon for a two week exclusive, but when fans outside of the US (who don’t have access to the Amazon Appstore) cried foul, the developer had to find a workaround.

“We’ve been really happy with Amazon’s flexibility,” Subatomic’s Alec Shobin said, “Initially, our contract stipulated that Fieldrunners HD would be a two week exclusive.”

“Amazon saw the huge public outcry and, in order to help us please our global fan base, changed our contract so that the two week exclusive only covered the US,” he added.  “Now, we’re allowed to release in the Android Market alongside our launch in the Amazon Appstore, and I’m hoping that this sets a precedent so other developers will have the same opportunity we’ve been given.”

“Digital marketplaces are ever changing, and we’re happy to have played a part in helping them adapt to meet developers’ and fans’ needs.”
