Here’s another example of Nintendo’s new push to appeal to the “traditional” gamer, this time from Nintendo of Japan. This quick ad for Xenoblade features one of the forty eight members of the the overpopulated Japanese pop super-group AKB48, dressed a a sword wielding robot-thing. Badassness. Wait a few seconds, and she’ll look you right in the eye and say “I want you to use this body as much as you want.” Badasssexiness.
I’m guessing that quite a few of you have already made this woman their new pretend-girlfriend. I’d be lying if I said the thought didn’t cross my mind for the past three days a split-second.
Still, I wonder if a Godly JRPG like Xenoblade has a chance in this modern, HD-focused world. Gamers in Japan seem more than willing to buy new, PS2-looking RPGs, as long as they’re on the PSP. When it comes to JRPG gaming on TVs, I fear that the pervading attitude is “HD or GTFO”. I doubt that’s going to change with Xenoblade, no matter how many Japanese pop-stars Nintendo throws at us.
Xenoblade launches in Japan on June 10th. It will be interesting to see how well it sells.
