Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello made news this morning when he let slip the name “Gem” while talking about Sony’s PS3 motion controller. Sony has responded to the speculation that this is the Wiimote’s official name, denying that the ludicrous moniker is anything more than a standby.
Sony states that Gem was an “early code name for the product” and that nothing has officially been announced yet. Perhaps Sony saw that the early reaction to the name was laughter and/or horror, so decided that maybe Gem was a bit too stupid a name for it.
At the time of writing, the name of Sony’s Wiimote is undecided. Currently it just looks stupid. We’re yet to know if it will sound stupid too.
