Halo 4 could have been another sequel starring the Chief

If you’ve played to the end of Halo 3 on Legendary then you know that they left it a bit open as to whether or not we’d be seeing Master Chief again. OK, the blatantly left it open so that even if Bungie left Microsoft could still make money of one of their only iconic characters. Little did we know that Bungie themselves were seriously considering making the next Halo game a direct sequel.

Speaking with MTV Multiplayer, Bungie’s Brian Jarrard revealed that they had talks to bring Master Chief back after awakening from his cryogenic sleep. “Even before the idea to build a game based around Reach came about, a lot of other concepts were explored, up to and including a proper ‘Halo 4,’ where Master Chief was going to wake up from cryo-sleep and we were going to tell that story.”

However, the idea never really moved past pre-production, as well it shouldn’t since Bungie would have opened up a whole new can of worms going down that route. That’s not just my opinion though, it’s Bungie’s actual thinking. “We don’t want to open up a whole bunch of doors that we’re not going to close. By the end of this, it’s all going to come to a nice, neat finish, and if people want to then go play the Halo trilogy, I think they’ll have a better understanding of what’s going on, but it’s not required at all,” Jarrard said.

Bravo to Bungie for going a different route, but imagine the money that could be made if they had gone with this: Master Chief crashes on a planet filled with pale teenage vampires and shirtless werewolves and must use his wavy arm attack (Kinect controlled, of course) to make them fall in love with him. It’s still possible. With Bungie and its “quality” gaming now out of the way Microsoft would make billions!
