SCEJ’s recent trademark doesn’t confirm or convince us that paid PSN subscriptions are indeed on the platform creator’s “to-do” list, but it does make us think that Sony might be considering delivering digital content in a different way.
On December 28th, Sony of Japan trademarked the name “Cloudsurf” for use with just about anything with a chip — from CD players to audio recorders, down to televisions, video cameras, PDAs, and “portable game machines.”
According to the filing, Cloudsurf will provide “game services” and “entertainment services” via the Internet. Games, audio, and video content as well as “electronic publications,” radio, and TV is said to be under its hood.
Paid PSN rumors got hot thanks to a marketing survey that teased a variety of features. The list included one-hour game trails, exclusive in-game content, and free access to the PSOne Classic store. The Cloudsurf trademark suggests none of this is happening, but trademarks are always delightfully vague.
If Cloudsurf sounds like the way you’re receiving content now, don’t panic: you’re correct. The reason for this trademark is beyond us at the moment. It might have been created just to screw with me on a Friday evening several days after the fact.
