Will Wright says games need to appeal to more people

Here is a bit of a no-brainer from game designing god Will Wright during an interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education: “We’ve had this cultural bias against games for the last 20 years, and a lot of it I think is self-deserved, because if you look at what people are doing with technology it is for the most part directed toward 12-year-old boys. But that doesn’t mean the format doesn’t have the potential to do a whole lot more.”

Thanks, but I think we hear this all the time and most likely have heard it from Wright before too. Thankfully, the rest of the interview goes more in depth on the often discussed subject, including why Wright doesn’t think current “serious” games are going about appealing to people very well. “I think (serious games) are great. I think there is an environment in which they are emerging in … there’s a tendency since they’re serious subjects to treat them very seriously.” Wright goes on to explain that maybe we should have some fun with serious subjects by making them a bit more abstract. I’m all for it, now someone go do it.
