Act surprised: Battlefield 1943 tops the XBLA activity chart

Who would have guessed that a condensed, affordable take on a immensely popular series such as Battlefield would have performed well on Xbox LIVE? It’s all about the brand, people!

Major Nelson recently posted the LIVE activity for the week of July 6 and, unsurprisingly, Battlefield 1943 was able to top the Xbox LIVE Arcade list, beating out poor ol’ Worms 2: Armageddon. This wasn’t at all shocking to me based on the game’s server problems, which are supposed to be fixed now.

As for the retail XBL activity list, Battlefield 1943 comes in after Halo 3, the two Call of Duty titles, and Gears of War 2. Not a bad start, honestly. It will be interesting to see if the game’s massive following sticks around, as XBLA games tend to lose their online community after a few months.

And simply because it’s kind of relevant, here’s a status update on the Coral Sea challenge. When players rack up 43 million kills, a new map/mode will be unlocked for everyone. At the time of writing, Xbox 360 players are at 39,503,444 and the PlayStation 3 community is at 20,567,588. We’re getting there!
