Rumor: PSP 2 happening, will have insane processor thing

Uh oh. Someone from Sony may have spilled some big beans. Eurogamer Spain believes they have documentation for the next-next PlayStation Portable. We’re not talking about the PSPgo. We’re talking about the PSP 2.

According to the documentation, the PSP 2 will use a quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP chip from Imagine Technologies. Eurogamer proper has likened the chip to what is inside Apple’s new iPhone 3GS except with more cores. Apparently this bad boy, through either voodoo or science, will be able to crank out Xbox-style visuals and speeds. Talk about a tech jump for handhelds.

We wouldn’t get too excited yet; the PSP 2 won’t be due out for a bit. Sony still has to convince consumers that the 250-dollar price tag for the eightieth PSP reboot (the PSPgo) is worth it. Plus, technology changes constantly. Next year at this time we might be sucking down dinner pills, living on Mars and enjoying Gatorade milk. That quad-core thing might not survive the year without being trumped by something better, smaller or faster.

Just keep this under your hat, folks and file this away as rumor for now. But wow, wouldn’t it be swell to rock out on a handheld that could handle Halo: Combat Evolved or Azurik?
