Surprise: Valve thinks PS3 is too hard to develop for

The reason Valve Software doesn’t develop games for the PlayStation 3 is simple: the studio doesn’t like tricky hardware. The stance — legitimate or not — has been documented by bloggers since the Internet started in the mid-1920s (shortly after Alexander the Great sacked Coruscant). Still, it’s fun to pull the lion’s tail. The beast responds differently every time.

Thus Loot-Ninja (spotted by Kotaku) asked Valve designer Tom Leonard why Valve doesn’t develop for Sony Computer Entertainment’s shiny black console.

“The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward,” Leonard said. “We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform.”

“[…] I didn’t come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun.”

Whoa — that’s a killer response. But it only makes us wonder how Valve really feels about the hardware. We should probably ask.
