Supreme Commander console sequel might not suck

The console port of Supreme Commander was terrible. The game’s frame rate constantly stuttered, the controls were felt like a child designed them, and the visual quality was beyond lackluster. It was essentially every reason why critics argue that real-time strategy isn’t possible on consoles. Well, until Halo Wars at least.

Despite the tragedy that was Supreme Commander, a console version of the sequel is currently in development under a different developer with a CEO who thinks his studio can get Supreme Commander right on consoles.

“I felt bad the developer who did the Xbox 360 version [Hellbent Games] just did not have the time or resources,” Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor told Joystiq during E3. “It was a hair on fire mission.”

“We’re doing it in-house and giving it a lot more time and a lot more resources,” Taylor continued. “I would be very surprised if it didn’t do as well as the PC version.”

Honestly, I’d be surprised if the game worked. I remember trying to review Supreme Commander when I started at Destructoid. It was the first work-related game I had to put down and walk away from. But, hey, here’s to hoping the sequel rocks. Consoles still need good RTS games.
