Creative Assembly isn’t threatened by console strategy games

While console-based real-time strategy games have made a lot of progress in recent years, we’re still quite a bit off from seeing them match what’s happening on the PC gaming scene.

Having recently released Empire: Total War, The Creative Assembly studio director Mike Simpson is all hot and bothered about the subject right now. As a matter of fact, he even spoke to GamesIndustry.biz to set the record straight.

“I don’t think that for PC strategy games… I don’t think it’s a threat. There’s certainly no sign from our franchise that’s happening. We’re always looking at ways to expand it, rather than working on an assumption that it’s going to decline,” he said.

Simpson also mentions the fact that much of what’s being done — in terms of pure graphical might — is dependent on the console lifespan. Similar to previous generations, we’ll eventually reach a point where certain games “can only be made with the power of PCs.” Agree? Disagree?
