Two free Springsteen tracks coming to Guitar Hero World Tour this January

While only some of you may love Bruce Springsteen, it’s hard to argue with free stuff.

This January, in conjunction with the release of Springsteen’s new album and his Super Bowl half-time performance, Activision will be offering up two free tracks for Guitar Hero World Tour.  One of the tracks, “My Lucky Day,” comes from his new album Working on a Dream. The other is the classic track “Born to Run,” from the 1975 album of the same name.

Two free tracks from a legendary singer-songwriter like Bruce Springsteen is a huge deal for Activision, who certainly has an uphill battle when it comes to competing with Rock Band‘s huge DLC library. No offense to Jonathan Coulton and the excellent “Still Alive,” but the MTV Games/Harmonix folks have yet to offer any tracks for free that are as “important” (at least from a music history standpoint) as “Born to Run.”

The announcement of the two free tracks for World Tour is particularly curious since long-time Springsteen collaborator and E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt is a member of the “Rock Band Music Advisory Board.” Perhaps you’ve forgotten about this possibly fictional publicity stunt — MTV Games/Harmonix haven’t really mentioned it much (if at all) since they announced it in July of 2007.

As an unashamed and very public “Rock Band fanboy,” this free DLC is particularly frustrating. My wife being a “Springsteen fangirl” means we’ll be playing Guitar Hero World Tour at least once this January. God damn it.
