How to fix D3D fatal error in the Resident Evil 4 remake

The RE Engine still has some kinks to work out on PC

Recommended Videos

The Resident Evil 4 remake has mostly been passing the smell test when it comes to performance: barring a few errant issues on PS5 and some PC-centric problems. We’re here to talk about the D3D fatal error today on the latter problem, and how to solve it.

What is the D3D fatal error?

D3D stands for “Direct3D,” which is an API (application programming interface) that facilitates games on a Windows-based PC.

This is actually a fairly common error for many PC releases, including a few from Capcom.

There is precedent for D3D fatal errors with Monster Hunter Rise, so there are fixes available

Folks have been getting D3D fatal errors for RE Engine-based games including Monster Hunter Rise, so there are several solutions that the community has come up with:

  • Restart your PC and verify the files. This is one of the biggest silver bullet options, as you can verify the files on Steam (right-click the game in Steam, go to properties, then go to local files, and verify integrity) to ensure that all of your D3D operations are in order.
  • Alternatively, you can ensure that your GPU is up to date with the latest drivers.
  • Try turning off ray-tracing from the game’s settings menu, then go back into the file where you encountered the D3D fatal error.
  • As a last resort, you can also reinstall the game.
