Elevator Action returns to arcades … as a light gun game!

I don’t really know how to describe a “joy explosion,” but I just had one upon hearing the news that Square Enix (who purchased Taito) is reinventing classic retro game Elevator Action. And, boy, when I say “reinventing” I really mean “reinventing.” Elevator Action: Death Parade (best title ever!) will be a light gun arcade game that — get ready for this — features actual metal elevator doors that cover the huge video screen. The large red button next to the guns will allow players to open and close the giant doors whenever they are ready to face the on-screen shooting action.

God, this sounds so awesome.

Sadly, the gorgeous cabinet won’t be released until next year … and only in Japanese arcades. Here’s hoping, though: maybe Square Enix will surprise us all and release this fantastic gem here.

What do you think? Are you drooling all over your computer like I am? What other retro franchises would you love to see get the light gun arcade treatment? And are you kind of grossed out by the term “joy explosion?”
