Captain Obvious: Pachter says Wii HD is certain in the future

Would I take the Wii more seriously as a console if it were on the same graphical par with the 360 and the PS3? Perhaps, although I often think that the extreme family-friendly approach is the bigger personal turnoff, when I’d rather be playing games like MadWorld. Analyst Michael Pachter weighed in on the topic recently, saying that he is convinced that Wii HD is on the way:

“Nintendo has to overcome that (in regards to the lack of third party titles). A Wii HD would really position Nintendo well, which is why I’m absolutely convinced there is a Wii HD coming. Businesswise, they can’t have people saying that their machine is a toy for my mom.”

But that’s just how Nintendo has positioned the Wii — for ages below and above the core gamer demographic. Perhaps the harsh reaction to their E3 press conference was part of what fueled the recent announcements about fan favorites such as Punch Out!

Of course, there’s always the rumor that Nintendo is currently showing off new Wii hardware to developers and publishers. I have to honestly say seeing Nintendo bring their business savvy to an HD console release would be a thrill for me. Let’s hope we have more news about this very soon.
