A gold-colored Commodore 64 sold on eBay yesterday for an absurd £2650. The collectible model is said to be one of only a few hundred in the world. They were made in 1986 to celebrate the production of one million C64s. It was a small world back then.
The ’64 in question was won by the seller’s parents at CeBit 1987 in Hanover, Germany, and it was swiftly locked away in a cupboard, never to be used. Speaking as someone who was a big fan of the C64 in his youth, I must admit that a golden one is bloody tempting, although £2650 is a bit rich for my blood.
It’s a bit rich for the retro community’s blood too, apparently. Retroheads have been shocked that the rare item sold for this much, as it beats out previous auctions for unreleased golden Commodores. Whoever bought it must have, to quote an old saying, more money than sense and bollocks for brains.
Still, he’s happy, so who are we to judge?
