Sega announces Sonic and the Black Knight

The Sonic storybook series that began with Sonic and the Secret Rings continues with this latest announcement for Sonic and the Black Knight. This Wii-exclusive title brings  Sonic back to medieval times, giving the hedgehog the chance to become a knight. How Arthurian!

Sonic actually takes up a sword in this new title by Sega Japan’s Sonic Team. The Wii Remote and Nunchuck will both be used in some fashion to provide an “interactive experience.” What do you want to bet that Sonic will swing his sword with your Wiimote movements?

Wait, spiky hair and a big sword? Sounds like something else I’ve played before.

“Sonic and the Black Knight is a stunning adventure into an epic land and story that no gamer can resist,” said Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. “Gamers will experience all the excitement of mastering a sword and true knighthood, as well as the classic, speedy, 2D/3D gaming action that Sonic is famous for.”

Sonic and the Black Knight will hit the Wii in Spring of 2009.

I don’t know what to think of this yet, and Sega has provided us with nothing in the way of pictures. Will it just be Sonic and his sword? That’s silly. How can you run fast with a sword? If he is not running fast, then how is he still Sonic?  Does it even seem right to you that Sonic would wield a sword? Is this a good idea, or are they slowly killing our favorite blue hedgehog?
