E3 08: FUNimation spearheads anime content on PSN, with a Bones surprise inside

[As originally posted on Japanator]

If you weren’t already curled up in a ball and dreaming of the day when Home would come out, Sony mentioned FUNimation as one of its partners in content distribution for their new video on demand service. FUNimation is currently the largest US anime licensor, and here’s a quick rundown of the content that’s on the PSN right now:

  • Afro Samurai
  • Astro Boy (Sony Pictures)
  • Basilisk
  • Burst Angel
  • Desert Punk
  • Gunslinger Girl
  • Kiddy Grade
  • Moon Phase
  • Samurai 7
  • Trinity Blood
  • Xam’d: Lost Memories
  • Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles

…wait, Xam’d? This title doesn’t mean much to most of you, but it’s the latest project from Bones, the animation studio behind Fullmetal Alchemist and Ouran High School Host Club. Xam’d, or Bounen no Xamdou, doesn’t even have a release date in Japan. What we have here is Sony making the extra push to get digital content onto the PSN, and they’re wooing the notoriously stubborn Japanese studios into putting their content online.

Fansubbing has been a serious issue, and so it’s nice to see that Sony helping to make headway (and realize what their fanbase likes). Japanator will have a review of Xam’d: Lost Memories up in the next day or two, so be sure to pay us a visit as well!
